Pecten is related to other scallops. Enumeratio molluscorum Siciliae cum viventium tum in tellure tertiaria fossilium, quae in itinere suo observavit. Even fossils of tropical plants such as ferns, cycads etc are being found in the Arctic island, Spitsbergen. The calico scallop, Argopecten gibbus, is closely related to the bay scallop; it is found also in the western North Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico but in deeper water further offshore.
